Extract Audio from OBS Recordings

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) creates high-quality screen recordings, typically in MKV or MP4 format. When you need just the audio - commentary, voice-over, or recorded audio content - our tool extracts it as MP3 without any uploads.

Converting OBS Recordings

Locate your OBS recording in the output folder you configured (default is Videos folder). The file is typically MKV or MP4. Drag it into our converter, select MP3, and extract the audio instantly.

Why Extract Audio from OBS Recordings?

OBS recordings are full video files that can be quite large. If you only need the voice commentary, audio podcast, or sound content, extracting to MP3 gives you a much smaller, more practical file.

OBS Audio Extraction Uses

  • Extracting podcast audio from video recordings
  • Getting commentary audio from gameplay recordings
  • Separating audio for use in other projects
  • Creating audio versions of video content

Private Recording Processing

OBS recordings may contain personal content, sensitive information, or creative work. Our local processing keeps your recordings private.

Troubleshooting

File is not supported

Re-export your source file in a common format and try again. Corrupted files may fail to decode.

Output has no audio

Your source may not contain an audio track, or it may use an uncommon codec. Try another source file to confirm.

Conversion is slow

Close heavy browser tabs and background apps. Local conversion speed depends on your device CPU and file size.

Large files fail

Split very large files into smaller parts or use a shorter clip first, then convert full media on a more powerful device.

Download did not start

Allow downloads for this site in browser settings and retry. Some blockers can prevent automatic file downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does OBS record to MKV by default?

OBS recommends MKV because it's resilient to crashes. If OBS crashes during recording, MKV files remain usable, while MP4 files can become corrupted. You can remux MKV to MP4 in OBS or convert here.

Can I convert OBS MKV files directly?

Yes! Our converter handles MKV files perfectly. You don't need to remux to MP4 first - just drag the MKV file in and extract the audio directly.

What about multi-track OBS recordings?

OBS can record multiple audio tracks (game audio, microphone, etc.). Currently, our tool extracts the primary mixed audio track. For separate tracks, use OBS's track separation feature before converting.

Will I get desktop audio and microphone?

Yes, if your OBS recording includes both, they're typically mixed in the primary audio track and will both be in the extracted MP3. Separate track recording requires different handling.

What quality should I use for voice recordings?

128kbps MP3 is excellent for voice commentary. If there's significant music or you want maximum quality, use 192-256kbps. Higher bitrates don't improve voice quality noticeably.
